Trondheim Open 2020: Production
30 Oct – 08 Nov
The day to day life of an artist is hard to describe. To produce art there is a lot of work involved, both pre and post work, in the form of research, experimenting, writing applications, reports, theoretical work and economics, just to name a few things. We all have different approaches, work methods, and ways of production, but one thing that is unanimous is that we have created our own space for working with art, with some distance from society’s demands of productivity and with new ways of thinking. This is, as curator Anne Szefer writes, our biggest privilege. Even so, it can be perceived as foreign and maybe even mysterious to outsiders.
In artist studios around the county, artists are working with physical labour both within arts and crafts and fine arts. However, artistic production can happen on different levels - in meetings between people, the artist’s meeting with the revolving world, by reaching new questions, ideas and concepts, both alone and together. Trondheim Open aims to showcase artistic work and the diversity of the artistic existence in Trøndelag. By showing and talking about how we work with production and what goes into producing art, we hope to spark and contribute to a raised awareness, enhanced discussions and reflections around the artist as a contributor to a communal understanding of the collective value of art.
This year's festival theme is PRODUCTION, a wide subject with a lot of opportunities for exploration. Whether you choose to visit the artists to learn more about their work with production, listen to artist talks and panel discussions, come to the art market or participate in the workshops, you will get an insight into the artistic production and the conditions the artists are working within.

Panel discussion: Artistic production
Trondheim Open welcomes you to a panel discussion about artistic production. To talk about the theme, we have invited a few profiles from the art community. What does it mean to work as an artist today? What prerequisites exist to have good production conditions for artists? Does art education have a particular role in creating a professional meeting ground between students and the established environment?
With Cathrine Hovdahl Vik (director at Kjøpmannsgata Ung Kunst), Matilde Westavik Gaustad (artist), Jacob Jessen (artist and professor at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art) in conversation with Marit K. Flåtter (editor at ArtScene Trondheim).
The conversation was documented and streamed with support from Trondheim Kommune.
Kunstnersamtale: Anna & Azra med Hasan Daraghmeh
Anna Lian and Azra Halilovic from the culture podcast ‘Anna & Azra bretter opp ermene’ (‘Anna & Azra rolls up their sleeves’) will meet with Hasan Daraghmeh for a conversation about how we can all see the world through digital units and how it affects our recollection and memories. How does the fact that everyone can document and manipulate the world through their smartphones influence our understanding of it?
Hasan Daraghmeh (b. 1983 in Palestine) lives in Trondheim. He uses time and space as two important materials in his videoworks, characterized by repetition and different modes of distortion of everyday spaces and landscapes.
Critic talk: The critic as a link between art and audience
Norsk Kritikerlag (Norwegian critics organisation) recently created a pilot program with regional contacts in Trøndelag and Vestland. As a part of Trondheim Open, the regional contacts in Trøndelag, Maria Veie Sandvik and Eline Bjerkan, invite you to a conversation about critique. The critic can, through their independent position, open up for reflection, consideration and interpretation when facing art. In this conversation the participants will discuss different angles of approach a viewer can consider when being introduced to a piece of art.
Artist talk: Annika Borg and Tina Jonsbu
The artist talk unfolds in Annika Borg’s exhibition “punkt.kontinuum”. As a starting point, it considers the things the two artists have in common: their working methods and time consuming processes that relate to a strict basic structure and given variables that are repetitive and concentrated but still make room for unforeseen results.
Tina Jonsby is a visual artist who lives and works in Oslo. She was educated at Statens høgskole for kunsthåndverk og design (1997) and recently finished her PhD in artistic development at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2020). Annika Borg (b. 1964) is a visual artist who lives and works in Trondheim. She was educated at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art (1996).
