About:

Amalia Fonfara (Nanortalik, 1985) works as an animist artist based in Trondheim.
Fonfara’s artistic practice is closely intertwined with her work within animism and Norse witchcraft traditions. Throughout, she has a processual and relational performative approach in her works, where the ritual and ceremonial are woven together with the performative and material artistic expression. Her working process is rooted in trance work where ancestral spirits, animal spirits and other beings from the Land, become an active part of the creative process and the works.
An important aspect of Fonfara’s work is how ritualistic practices and magical thinking in contemporary art can create dialogue for deeper relationships to the more than human world. As well as how these practices can bring healing to our society, damaged by colonialism and the separatist agenda of modernity, where human culture is separated from nature and thus also humans from other beings.
Fonfara works in various media such as film, video, sculpture, sound, music, installation, performance and socially participatory projects. In the exhibition space, various objects and sculptural installations are often activated in ceremonial and ritual interactions with the audience, where the soul connection is at the center.
